Heraklion
The gateway to Crete. Heraklion itself is more of a functional city than a destination — most people pass through on the way to the rest of the island. But the Minoan ruins at Knossos just outside the city are genuinely worth half a day. Good food, good weather, and a useful base before heading west toward Chania.
