September 2022 — Iceland

Reykjavik

The people are crazy and the landscape is crazy — that's the honest summary of Iceland. I based myself at the Hi Loft Hostel in Reykjavik every night and did day trips to the south coast: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, black sand beaches, and the kind of scenery that makes you feel like you're on a different planet. The city itself punches well above its size for nightlife — Reykjavik goes hard on weekends. Expensive, yes. Worth it, absolutely.

Hi Loft Hostel

Reykjavik, Iceland · hostel · €45/night · September 2022

4.0 /5

Pros

  • + Central Reykjavik location
  • + Great social atmosphere — met people doing the same south coast day trips
  • + Staff give genuinely useful local advice
  • + Good value for Iceland's price level

Cons

  • Iceland is expensive regardless of where you stay
  • Dorm noise on weekend nights when the city goes out

“A solid base for exploring Iceland. Central location in Reykjavik, good social atmosphere, and the staff actually know the city well — they pointed me toward day trip operators that were worth the money. For a hostel in one of the most expensive cities in Europe, the value is genuinely good.”
